Information Welcome To the Mt. Sinai / Miller Place Youth Hockey Club. This ice hockey organization was founded around 1990 for the purpose of developing character, sportsmanship, physical fitness, and hockey skills among the community youth in grades 7-12. The MSMPYHC is a non-profit organization operating youth ice hockey programs primarily in the school districts of Mt. Sinai, Rocky Point and Miller Place for the benefit of those residing there. The club associates with other ice hockey programs, and competes in tournaments as well as local scholastic league play on freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels. These hockey programs strive to be consistent with the rules and regulations of the Suffolk County High School Hockey League, New York State Amateur Hockey Association, and USA hockey. Previous members have progressed to officiating, travel level, junior and collegiate level hockey. Many of our players have distinguished themselves in the game. Some of these players gained initial interest in the sport through inline hockey. The club welcomes and supports inline (roller) hockey players who would like to make the step to ice hockey. Funding The Club is funded through membership / player fees, donations, and fundraising events. Any parent or guardian who pays a player fee is a member for that fiscal year. Any other interested person may become a member for the annual fee of ten dollars. Player fees and payment schedules are determined on the basis of projected rosters, and obligations including league fees, ice rental, liability insurance, bank fees, awards events, general equipment, and misc. expenses. Player fees average around $1100 (fall) and $500 (spring). Not included, are items such as player equipment, sweaters, socks, mouth guards, and tape. Game sweaters and socks, will be ordered by the club, but members will be charged at cost. Teams The club is eligible to submit teams for competition on three levels as follows: Freshman - 7th thru 9th Junior Varsity - 9th thru 11th Varsity - 7th thru 12th Note: Players entering 7th grade must be 12 years old by their first game. Team rosters may not exceed 18 skaters and 20 in total including goaltenders. Coaches The general manager will appoint a Head Coach for each team. He will consider knowledge, responsibility, attitude, and experience in their choice. A head coach must possess a current USA Hockey Advanced Level Coach rating. Assistant coaches are chosen by the Head Coach and should possess at least a USA Hockey Intermediate Level Coach rating. A head coach may choose to recruit others to assist him. These might be such as statistician, parent rep, team manager, etc. Players The Head Coach will choose players for his assigned team. Tryouts are held in early summer to determine a players level of skill and prepare rosters for the fall. Tryouts are especially important when player "cuts" are inevitable. In some instances, the Head Coach may try to obtain "out of district" players to fill out a roster. This will not be permitted if a district player has been "cut". "Cuts" Players who are cut from a team may practice with the team to help improve skills. They will be charged a pro-rated per practice fee to cover insurance and practice ice cost. They may also opt to play "out of district". "Out of district" Players who cannot find a spot on the club roster may still play for another school team. This is considered "out of district" play. Freshman players who are interested in this option should inform the head coach or general manager. The League and other teams will be informed of this decision and will contact the interested player. If MSMPYHC is unable to roster a team because of non-interest, efforts will be taken to have small groups of our district players "stay together" and go to one team. Adjoining districts usually have preference in acquiring our players. Players Draft JV and Varsity players who are interested in "out of district" play will have to demonstrate their skills in a league conducted exhibition and players draft. Here players pay a fee and practice / scrimmage with other draft players. This exhibition is observed by team officials from all league organizations, who have interest in obtaining additional players. Choices are made and players are notified immediately following the skate. Positioning of draft choices, are determined by the last seasons standings. The fee covers ice cost and a deposit, which is applied to the League fee of the drafting team. Captains Captains are chosen at the discretion of the Head Coach. The primary function of the captain is to approach the game officials for an explanation of some rule or action during a game. Only a captain or his alternate are permitted this privilege. The Head Coach will consider knowledge of game rules, temperament, and responsibility when choosing captains. Club Rules MSMPYHC maintains a list of club rules and regulations for members and players. These rules are in addition to USA Hockey, NYSAHA, and SCHSHL regulations. They will address both on and off ice situations. Suffolk County High School Hockey League Play All league games are currently played at "The Rinx" in Hauppauge. All game times and dates are scheduled by the League. Efforts are made to have games scheduled with freshman teams competing at earlier times however there will be some varsity games that end around midnight. Teams finishing in 1st place will have the opportunity to advance to state, regional, and national championships. Frequency of games average one per week. The President of the MSMPYHC will act as general manager and he or his designee will represent the club at all league functions. Team Practice USA Hockey guidelines recommend "at least two practices for every game". This standard is difficult to maintain as a result of high ice cost and varied interest in the sport. With full rosters and more than one team in the club, it is easier to afford ice by sharing. The ratio of league clubs to rinks is high and it is difficult for inconsistent clubs to maintain their ice slots. As a result, it is often necessary to obtain practice ice at varied times and dates. Sharing ice with other clubs is another option which is sometimes utilized. Off ice practices may also scheduled where practical. Meetings Teams may schedule player and or parent meetings during the season to provide information, and or deal with problems and concerns. These will be held before games and at other convenient times where possible. The Board will call for at least one meeting of the full membership during the year. Insurance All USA Hockey registered players and coaches are insured in accordance with the published policy which is posted on their website at www.usahockey.com. It is strongly advised that players be additionally insured to provide coverage for costs up to the deductible amount provided by USA Hockey. Most members already have such coverage through their work. Award Event In the late spring, the club holds an awards event. This is usually in the form of a dinner at which members and players are recognized for their achievements. The type of event is determined by available funds and general interest. All Star Game Each fall season, the League hosts three separate all star games (freshman, jv, varsity) comprised of two players from each team. The players representing, are chosen by the Head Coach. The varsity game is known as the Vytra Cup challenge and is held at the Nassau Coliseum. The Vytra Cup challenge is an exhibition game between Nassau and Suffolk Varsity All Stars Tournament Play The Rinx usually hosts one or two High School Tournaments each year over a weekend. Three games are often guaranteed. Cost ranges around $65 per player. Several distant tournaments are held on holiday weekends and are fun times where parents and players have good opportunities to bond. Popular venues are at Lake Placid, Hershey, and areas of Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. If there is sufficient interest, these possibilities will be explored. All tournaments involve additional cost. Group Outings Outings such as sporting events, and picnics or barbeques may be held if there is interest. Fund Raising The Board of Governors explore venues and ideas which may help reduce operational costs for the organization. Any suggestions will be reviewed for possible benefit and viability. Web Site The club currently operates a web site at http://MustangsIceHockey.com. This site will post important news and information, as well as team statistics. Along with E-MAIL, this site will be used to communicate when possible to eliminate time consuming phone calls and lost messages.
